The Allegheny County Health Department, on Feb. 24, 2026, announced that Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health has initiated a voluntary recall of its rabies vaccine. The impacted vials may have had sterile water rather than the rabies vaccine.

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health has notified veterinarians who received shipments of the vials, and veterinarians should have, in turn, contacted the owners of those pets who received the vaccine. However, the manufacturer is encouraging pet parents to check their vaccine certificates, if their pets received the rabies vaccine after Sept. 29, 2025.

Pet parents should look for the following information:

Recalled lot number: IMRAB 3TF

Serial number: 18665

Expiration: March 12, 2027

Those pets who were given the impacted product must get the correct vaccine. Pet parents should contact their veterinarian to schedule an appointment to ensure their dog or cat’s vaccine, according to Pennsylvania law, is kept current.

Fortunately, the number of pets impacted is relatively low, according to the vaccine’s manufacturer.

“The single impacted serial represents approximately 2.5 percent of the total IMRAB® doses sold annually in the United States in 2025,” Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health stated in a news release on Feb. 13, 2026.
